WHEN TO DRAIN YOUR POOL
In Arizona, the general rule is to drain and refill your pool every 2 to 3 years.
Arizona’s extreme heat leads to high evaporation rates, leaving behind concentrated minerals like calcium and salts. Over time, these "Total Dissolved Solids" (TDS) make the water nearly impossible to balance, rendering your chemicals ineffective and damaging your pool's surface.
When to Drain: Key Indicators
•High Calcium Hardness: If your calcium levels are too high, you'll see "scaling" (white crusty rings) around your tile line.
•Chemical Resistance: If you are constantly adding chlorine but still fighting algae or murky water, your Cyanuric Acid (CYA) or TDS levels may be too high. Normal CYA levels are 30-80. Anything above 100 is considered high.
•Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Most experts recommend a drain if TDS levels exceed 2,000–2,500 ppm.
•Visual Cues: Salty-tasting water, eye irritation, or a rough "sandpaper" feel on the pool floor.
Arizona-Specific Tips
•Best Time to Drain: Aim for Spring or Fall when temperatures are between 70°F and 85°F.
•Summer Danger: Avoid draining in the peak of summer (June–August). Intense sun can crack your plaster or cause the pool to "pop" out of the ground if not handled correctly.
•Local Rules: You must typically drain your pool into your home's sewer clean-out. Draining into the street or storm drains is often prohibited by city regulations.
Note: If you use a water softener for your pool's auto-fill line, you may be able to stretch the time between drains to 3-5+ years.
