For most residential pools, especially in Arizona’s desert climate, a swimming pool should typically be serviced once a week. Some pools like AIRBNB pools will require twice a week.
Here’s why:
Water Balance: Weekly service ensures pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and CYA levels stay in the correct range.
Cleanliness: Regular skimming, vacuuming, and brushing prevent debris buildup and algae growth.
Equipment Maintenance: Weekly checks catch issues with pumps, filters, heaters, or plumbing before they become bigger problems.
Seasonal Adjustments: In summer or during heavy use, some pools may benefit from twice-weekly service to keep water safe and clear.

When?
In Arizona’s desert climate—including right here in Phoenix—it’s generally best to drain and fully refill an in-ground pool every 3 to 5 years. Many variables can change that however 3-5 years is a good rule of thumb.
WHY?
Chemical buildup: Elevated levels of cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, or TDS can make balancing the water nearly impossible—draining is the most effective solution. If you’re experiencing a green pool, draining can sometimes be more cost efficient depending on the type of equipment and filtration system you have. It’s also a great time to do an acid wash and remove any unwanted stains like rust.
-
Draining during hot, dry summer months can damage pools; the heat and arid air may cause cracking or structural stress. We recommend draining during the cooler months. It’s safer to plan draining when temperatures are below about 85–90°F. Draining at the wrong time or too frequently can put stress on pool surfaces and structure, especially during extreme heat.

CYA stands for Cyanuric Acid, which is basically sunscreen for your chlorine. Purpose: CYA protects chlorine from being broken down too quickly by the sun’s UV rays. Without it, chlorine in an outdoor pool can burn off in just a few hours.
• How it works: It binds to free chlorine in the water, slowing down the rate at which sunlight destroys it.
• Ideal range: For most outdoor pools, the sweet spot is about 30–60 ppm (parts per million).
• Too much CYA: High levels (over ~80–100 ppm) can cause “chlorine lock,” where chlorine becomes less effective at killing bacteria and algae—even if your test shows you have plenty. The only real way to lower CYA is to partially or completely drain and refill your pool.
• Where it comes from: Often added directly as a stabilizer, but it also builds up over time if you use stabilized chlorine products like trichlor tablets or dichlor shock.
If your pool is in Arizona, CYA management is extra important because of our intense sun—skip it, and you’ll be refilling chlorine constantly. Why this matters:
• Even though chlorine tests may show 3–5 ppm, only a fraction of that is “active” when CYA is high.
• At 100 ppm CYA, chlorine works at about one-third the strength it does at 30 ppm.
• Lower CYA = faster chlorine action, but less sun protection. Higher CYA = more sun protection, but weaker chlorine.

PLAY POOL?
A play pool gets its name because it’s designed more for fun and activities than for serious swimming or diving. Here’s why it’s called that: Shallow Depth: Most play pools are around 3.5–5 feet deep across most of the pool, so there’s no deep end. This makes it safer and easier for games like volleyball, basketball, or just hanging out.
DIVING POOL?
Some pools are called diving pools because they’re specifically built to be deep and safe enough for diving boards or platforms. Here’s what makes them different:
Depth: A true diving pool usually has a deep end of at least 8 feet, but many are 9–12 feet deep to safely handle the impact of a dive.
Shape: Often have a steep slope from the shallow end to the deep end, or a hopper-shaped deep section.
Equipment: Designed to accommodate a diving board or jump platform—something a shallower pool can’t safely support. (Keep in mind the due to insurance issues most diving boards may have been removed due to the liability of someone getting hurt).
Purpose: Built for swimming, diving, and sometimes competitive training—not as ideal for casual games like volleyball because of the depth difference.

-Here's a breakdown of what's typically included:
1. Cleaning and debris removal
Skimming: Removing leaves, bugs, and other floating debris from the pool's surface using a skimmer net.
Brushing: Scrubbing the pool walls, steps, and floor to prevent algae growth and remove dirt and grime.
Vacuuming: Removing debris and sediment that accumulates on the pool floor as needed.
Emptying baskets: Cleaning out the skimmer, pump baskets and inline leaf catch to ensure proper water flow and prevent clogging. This also ensures proper flow and damage to baskets that may be over filled.
2. Water chemistry maintenance
Testing: Using a test kit to check the levels of pH, chlorine (or other sanitizer), alkalinity, and calcium hardness.
Balancing: Adjusting chemical levels as needed to maintain proper water balance, ensuring the water is safe and comfortable for swimmers.
Shocking: Regularly adding a chlorine shock treatment to kill bacteria, break down contaminants, and eliminate chloramines.
3.Equipment inspection and maintenance
Pump, filter, and heater: Inspecting the pump, filter, and heater for signs of damage or leaks and ensuring they are functioning correctly.
Backwashing (for Sand or DE filters, this involves backwashing) to remove trapped debris and maintain optimal filtration. We also check the backwash valve for proper operation and lube as needed.
Checking and maintaining other equipment: Inspecting and maintaining other pool equipment such as automatic cleaners, suction cleaners and salt cells if applicable.
4.Overall pool health assessment
Algae treatment: Addressing any signs of algae growth and applying algaecide if necessary.
Water level check: Monitoring the water level , especially after heavy use or evaporation during hot weather. This includes physically inspecting the water leveler.
5. Communication
Text ahead alerts: You will receive a text message after we complete the stop before heading to your home letting you know we are headed your way. This gives you time to put any pets away or unlock gates.
Email reports: After service is completed you will automatically receive an email report of your pool. This will give you a detailed report of the task completed and any issues we may have reported. You will also have a current pic of the pool once service is completed. This is extremely beneficial during vacation's so you can see your pool is taken care of while you relax.
In essence, a reputable weekly pool service will handle the routine tasks that keep your pool clean, healthy, and inviting, allowing you to enjoy your pool without the hassle of regular maintenance
